What's the hourly rate?

It amazes me on how many times the first question ever asked is

"how much is your hourly rate?" when one electrician could take twice as long as another just to do the same job.

Wouldn't it be better to ask the company for some references to follow up with because who would you rather believe, the word of the company or the word of their Customers?
